About the API ratings:
I have found the hard way, twice, that all the information warning against usage of API SH or higher are true. You will very probably get a slipping clutch using those oils. SH and higher classifications have mainly more and more friction reducers which cause clutch problems. Itīs either API SG ( such as Mobil Super 10W40, which I use nowadays.. no idea whether itīs available in U.S.) or those pretty expensive bike specific oils. Let your wallet decide.

As for air filter trouble, I tend to think you have overfilled with oil if the filter gets soaked. Excess oil gets pumped up through breather soaking the filter element. I, too, had some oil drops splattering against battery cover but it wonīt be more than cosmetical trouble, unless you really have a proper leak, in which case you could damage the engine (because of low oil pressure) sooner than the air filter.
